Eagerly anticipated, head-shakingly watched – this year’s Champions League round of 16 draw was anything but boring or on schedule. A glitch ensured that the now fixed pairings were only drawn at the second attempt.
This was not necessarily an advantage for Real Madrid, because when the opponents were decided, the royals had to swallow hard: Paris St. Germain! It would have been hard to get a stronger runner-up in the group.
The Madrilenians tried to lodge a protest, but in the end it was clear: Mbappe and Co. would be it. On 15 February 2022, the white ballet must first play in the French capital, before they enjoy home rights on 9 March.
It is definitely the clash of two absolute title favourites to be mentioned in the same breath. In our PSG Real Madrid promotion tip, we will take a first look at who is more likely to reach the quarter-finals.
It’s a scramble among the bookies for the better odds, but it’s actually the Parisians who are slightly ahead. “Actually” because the last few years have actually brought far too little international success.
Semifinals, finals, three consecutive round of 16 finishes, PSG are still waiting for their first handle pot. The 2021/22 group stage had brought both light and shade. Against Manchester City, there was both a 2:0 and a 1:2.
It was noticeable, however, that the defence was not at all solid. Four goals were conceded against Leipzig alone, eight are actually too many. Exactly this problem can also be seen in the domestic Ligue 1.
There, PSG is far in the lead, but several last-minute points show that the performances are not on target. They cannot afford such lapses against Real Madrid.
Actually, they say, home advantage is not welcome in the first leg. But if the French can get ahead anywhere, it’s probably at home. All three games at Prinzenpark have been won!
Also, looking at the head-to-head comparison between Paris and Real Madrid, their own stadium could be an advantage. In 2019/20, the two starting squads met in the group, and the 3-0 win at home was praised by the entire football world.
A knockout duel, however, is of course a very different situation. It was almost four years ago that both teams had to decide between themselves for the first time in the top flight. 3:1 and 2:1, the Madrilenians clearly had their noses in front here.
Will the Parisians be able to get rid of a major rival this time? Hardly any other team is as ruthless on the international stage as Real Madrid. The record champions, however, are equally familiar with the feeling of being eliminated early.
In 2019 and 2020, they were eliminated in the round of 16. Once Ajax Amsterdam was too strong, then Manchester City. And indeed, one can also find a very early exit against a French representative. In the 2009/10 season, it was Olympique Lyon who represented a surprising stumbling block. Basically, however, the record against the French is quite good, only seven of 32 games have been lost.
In the preliminary round, Real showed that they are once again favourites for the title. Leaving aside the embarrassing 2-1 slip-up against Tiraspol, the results have been impressive.
The two nil victories against Italian champions Inter Milan were particularly strong, as these opponents are known for their top offensive performance. No goals conceded in four of six games, the defensive bar was raised.
In the Primera Division, Madrid have lost a single game, here both attack and defence are right. In Karim Benzema, there is also a striker who will be doubly motivated against his countrymen.
It will also be interesting to see what role Kylian Mbappe will play. The superstar is desperate to join Real Madrid, but so far the French have not let him go. While the oddsmakers are more likely to back PSG to progress, the odds for the first win are even more pronounced.
2.10 at 3.50 in the first leg on French soil? If you don’t underestimate the visitors for once. For me, Real’s performances are simply more consistent, especially defensively.
That’s why I’m betting on Real Madrid reaching the quarter-finals!
