Florian Wirtz comes from Pulheim, a medium-sized town in North Rhine-Westphalia. He was born there on May 3, 2003.
The Florian Wirtz family is large, very large. His parents, Hans-Joachim and Karin Wirtz, have a total of ten (!) children – Florian is the youngest. His father Hans was a soccer coach himself until 2019, and his mother Karin was active in handball.
Fun fact: Until 2016, the Florian Wirtz family did not have a television – due to time constraints: the family spent too much time at the local sports facility.
In a large family with many sporting genes, it is not surprising that one or two of Florian Wirtz’s nine siblings have made it into professional sport.
Like his sister Juliane. Florian’s older sister is a professional soccer player herself and currently plays for Werder Bremen. Before that, Wirtz’s sister Juliane also played for Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Fun fact: Both Florian and Juliane started their careers at SV Grün-Weiß Brauweiler before moving to 1. FC Köln and later to Bayer Leverkusen.
The second Wirtz sister with close ties to the Werkself is Sophia, who works in the office at Bayer Leverkusen’s training center.

Aaliyah: Who is Florian Wirtz’s mysterious girlfriend?
For a long time, Florian Wirtz has only professed his love for the ball. But since fall 2022, it seems that Florian Wirtz has a girlfriend. Her name is Aaliyah.
Wirtz’s girlfriend Aaliyah has been spotted several times in the stands at BayArena—and also at some national team games. She is likely already well acquainted with Florian’s family, as she has always sat next to Florian Wirtz’s father Hans.
Other than that, nothing is publicly known about Aaliyah, not even what she does for a living. The couple is very private in public.
The only thing that has been revealed to the public so far has come from Wirtz himself. In an interview, he said that Aaliyah had been a strong source of support for him during his injury break.

The Florian Wirtz career: From Cologne to Leverkusen
Florian Wirtz’s career began in the youth team of SV Grün-Weiß Brauweiler in Pulheim.
The pitch is only a two-minute walk from his parents’ house, where little Florian laced up his soccer boots for the first time at the age of just three (!). His father Hans-Joachim was also the chairman of the small club.
At the age of eight, he moved to Sülz in the west of Cologne in 2011 to join RheinEnergie-Sportpark, which serves as the youth academy for 1. FC Köln. There, he spent eight and a half years playing for various youth teams at Effzeh. With the U17 team of 1. FC Köln, Wirtz won the championship in the B-Junior Bundesliga in the 2018/19 season.
In January 2020, Wirtz left 1. FC Köln and moved to arch-rivals Bayer Leverkusen.
This caused quite a stir, as there had been an agreement between 1. FC Köln, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, and Borussia Mönchengladbach since 2001 that none of the three clubs would sign any of the other clubs’ youth players from their current contracts to play for their own youth teams.
Leverkusen “cheated” and claimed to have signed Florian Wirtz for their professional team. The transfer fee for the super talent was only €300,000.
Wirtz later explained his move from Cologne to Leverkusen as follows: “I had to look at my future and my prospects, and when I look back, it was the right decision. At Cologne, I wasn’t even thinking about the pros at that point; that was a long way off.”
In addition, Bayer’s appreciation for the youngster is said to have been a decisive factor, especially for his parents. There were also offers from other big clubs, but these were out of the question because he wanted to stay in the Rhineland for his school education.
Now that he has completed his education, nothing stands in the way of a great soccer career.

On October 9, 2020, he made his debut for the U21 national team, became U21 European champion in the summer of 2021, and made his debut for the senior national team a few months later, in September 2021.
- Florian Wirtz made his Bundesliga debut in Leverkusen in May 2020 (matchday 26 against Werder Bremen), making Wirtz the youngest Bundesliga player in Leverkusen’s club history at 17 years and 15 days.
- At the same time, Wirtz became the third-youngest player ever to play in the Bundesliga, behind Nuri Şahin (16 years, 335 days) and Yann Aurel Bisseck (16 years, 362 days).
