In the previous season, Toppmöller had led Eintracht to third place and thus into the Champions League – the club’s best league position in three decades.
Frankfurt’s hopes are diminished this season above all by a vulnerable defence: With 39 goals conceded, Eintracht has the weakest defence in the league.
Last season, Frankfurt was still 28 points ahead of Hoffenheim. This gap has not only been closed in the meantime – Hoffenheim is currently in better form and with momentum on the way to the Champions League.

Eintracht Frankfurt have not won in their last four Bundesliga games (three draws, one defeat) – the longest negative streak since the period from April to August 2024 (five games).
These results led to the dismissal of coach Dino Toppmöller last week. The 45-year-old was in office for two and a half years, coached the Eagles in 121 competitive games and led the club into the UEFA Champions League for the first time via league placement.
Even the 3-3 draw against Werder Bremen, in which Ansgar Knauff scored the equaliser in injury time, could not save Toppmöller’s job. In total, Frankfurt have only managed one win in their last nine competitive games – just before the Champions League trip to Qarabag on Wednesday.

In the last eleven Bundesliga games, there has been only one defeat (eight wins, two draws). Since the seventh matchday, only Bayern Munich have collected more points (32) than Hoffenheim (26).
Without the additional burden of the European Cup and after being eliminated from the DFB Cup, Hoffenheim can realistically hope for a return to the Champions League – seven years after their last participation.
In the previous season, the club had big problems as fourth-last, also due to the double burden in the Europa League.
In the summer, however, the defence was strengthened, including the signings of Albian Hajdari and Vladimír Coufal, as well as two central midfielders who provide stability to the team: Leon Avdullahu and Wouter Burger.
Avdullahu, for example, ranks sixth in the league in terms of possession won per 90 minutes (5.96). Burger has already been directly involved in eight goals this Bundesliga season – with four goals and four assists.
