Champions League draw league phase 2024: This is the new mode

What’s new about the Champions League draw for the league phase?

Instead of a group stage with eight groups of four teams each, all 36 clubs will start in a joint league phase next season.

Another change is that instead of three opponents with a first and second leg, eight different teams will play each other – with four games at home and four games away.

This change will of course also be reflected in the 2024 Champions League draw.

The pots for the 2024 Champions League draw will be divided according to the UEFA coefficient, which divides the 36 teams into four pots of nine teams each. Each club is allocated two opponents from each pot.

Although there is no provision for clubs from the same country to play each other, exceptions are possible if the respective nation has four or more clubs (such as Germany with five teams).

Each participating club is drawn once by hand, after which a special software program is used to randomly determine the remaining opponents from the individual pots and who they will play at home and who they will play away.

The 4 pots of the 2024 Champions League phase draw

In the 2024 CL draw for the new league phase, 29 participants qualify automatically. In addition, there are 7 winning teams from the fourth qualifying round, the Champions League play-offs.

These 36 teams will be divided into 4 draw pots at the league phase draw. This division is based on the UEFA coefficient, a kind of “ranking list” of the European soccer association.

CL draw 2024 league phase: The opponents of the German clubs

With champions Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and VfB Stuttgart, five German teams are in the 2024 Champions League draw for the new league phase.

Who the German opponents will be in the new league phase will be decided in the draw on Thursday.

Due to the new CL draw mode, there could be some explosive matches. Here are a few possible scenarios for Bayern, Dortmund and Leverkusen

The possible opponents of Bayern Munich

Bayern may not be in this year’s 2024 Champions League draw as German champions, but they are still one of the top teams in Europe in the first draw pot. This results in the following scenarios for the CL League phase draw.

For example, Bayern could face defending champions Real Madrid and English champions Manchester City in pot 1. From the second pot, matches against Atletico Madrid and Juventus Turin are conceivable.

PSV Eindhoven (Dutch champions) and Benfica Lisbon (Portuguese champions), for example, could be drawn from the third pot of the 2024 league phase draw, while the final pot could see matches against Aston Villa and AS Monaco. That would be a kind of “horror draw” for Bayern

Champions League draw 2024: Who will BVB face?

However, the CL League phase draw could also be difficult and complicated for BVB, who are also in pot 1 – but unlike in the past, it no longer excludes the really tough opponents in the preliminary round.

As a result, Borussia Dortmund could face reigning champions Real Madrid, against whom the Black & Yellows lost the final in May, again after the CL League phase draw. In addition to Man City, the caliber of Liverpool FC and Italian champions Inter Milan would also be waiting in pot 1.

Pot 2 also has a lot to offer Borussia with Arsenal, Atalanta, AC Milan, Benfica as well as Juventus and Atletico. In addition to PSV Eindhoven and Sporting Lisbon, Feyenoord and Celtic Glasgow are also possible opponents from pot 3.

From the fourth pot, BVB could not only face AS Monaco or Aston Villa after the 2024 CL draw, but perhaps also Austrian champions Sturm Graz, FC Bologna or France’s surprise team Stade Brest

CL League phase draw: Champions duels for Leverkusen

In theory, Bayer Leverkusen could face only champion teams in the new league phase after the Champions League draw.

From pot 1, they could face PSG (champions of France) and Inter Milan (champions of Italy), while Donetsk (champions of Ukraine) and FC Brugge (champions of Belgium) are two possible opponents from pot 2.

From the third pot for the new CL draw, Bayer 04 could face Celtic Glasgow (champions of Scotland) and Young Boys Bern (champions of Switzerland).

From the fourth pot, two further title holders await the Werkself: Sturm Graz (champions of Austria) and Sparta Prague (champions of the Czech Republic).

The matchdays of the 2024 Champions League phase

The exact match schedule for the new CL League phase will be announced after the draw. It will then be clear who plays against whom on which day (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday).

However, the individual dates and days on which the preliminary round matches in the top flight will be played have already been determined.

The first match day will take place from September 17 to 19. The final round of the new Champions League phase is scheduled for January 29, 2025

Game schedule & dates of the group stage

  • 1st matchday: September 17-19, 2024
  • Matchday 2: October 1-2, 2024
  • 3rd matchday: October 22-23, 2024
  • 4th matchday: November 5-6, 2024
  • 5th matchday: November 26-27, 2024
  • 6th matchday: December 10-11, 2024
  • 7th matchday: January 21-22, 2025
  • 8th matchday: January 29, 2025

The top eight teams after the eight-match basic round qualify for the Champions League round of 16. The 16 teams ranked 9th to 24th will play in the play-offs for the remaining eight places in the CL round of 16.

The European Cup season is over for the teams ranked 25th to 36th after the preliminary round. There is no longer any “relegation” to the Europa League
