They have left the group of pursuers – for the time being! Chelsea and Newcastle need to quickly regain their footing in the Premier League if they are to make it into the international competition at the end of the season.
The Blues have home advantage on Sunday and actually really like home games against the Magpies. Why is that and why am I clearly betting on a BTS? I’ll tell you all about it in my Chelsea Newcastle tip!
Bad start, good reaction, unfortunately also deteriorated again – Chelsea FC still don’t really know what to make of the season so far. The bare facts: four wins, two draws and two defeats.
The fact that they only lost to Manchester City and Liverpool, and with relatively narrow margins of 0-2 and 1-2 respectively, is encouraging. The draws against Nottingham and Crystal Palace, on the other hand, are a little more painful.
The Blues don’t seem to have decided on a strategy yet. They can ambush their opponents like in the 6-2 win against Wolverhampton or the 4-2 win against Brighton, but then they run into offensive difficulties again.
And anyone who thinks that a home game would certainly be an advantage… is not quite right. 0-2 against City, 1-1 against Crystal Palace, 4-2 against Brighton and 1-1 against Nottingham, they have only won once!
In three of the four games at Stamford Bridge, they conceded the 0-1, which does not necessarily speak for the concentration. If exactly the same thing happens on Sunday, you can get odds of 2.40 at Betano.
Of course, you may also have noticed from the list of results that the Londoners have never managed to play to a clean sheet in front of their fans. Two goals conceded alternate with one, so this weekend it would be their turn again for two.
Over 1.5 goals for the Magpies? It doesn’t seem particularly realistic to the bookmakers, because it would give odds of 2.30. Chelsea is very much dependent on two stars when it comes to their own goal threat.
Joe Palmer has six goals and Nicolas Jackson has five. One goal from Jackson, one goal and one assist from Palmer: both were in great form in the last game against Newcastle.
After four games without a win, Chelsea finally beat the Magpies again, and now they want to get another win under their belts. What the fans like to hear anyway: they have not lost a home game since May 2012.
The last defeat in London in the Premier League in a first round? There is none! Historically speaking, it is no wonder that the bookmakers favor Chelsea for the clash at the weekend.
The Blues have an average odds of 1.80 on the Admiralbet app, while Newcastle is already 4.10. This probably has something to do with the fact that the guests are out of form.
With three wins and a draw, the season had started well, but since all successes were already very close, some people might have suspected something.
And lo and behold, the team has not recovered from the 1-3 defeat to Fulham to this day. Admittedly, a 1-1 draw against Manchester City is something to be happy with, but a 0-0 draw against Everton and a 0-1 defeat to Brighton cannot be accepted when measured against your own standards.
Two goals from the last four games, none in the last two, and a total of eight? No, you won’t win any prizes with that. Three of them were scored away from home, so it doesn’t seem like the Chelsea defense is in any real danger.
They only managed to win 2-1 against Wolverhampton (with a late goal). Don’t forget: they are bottom of the league with only a single point to their name.
Neither Chelsea nor Newcastle can really speak of being in top form at the moment. While the Blues are having problems with their defense at home, the Magpies are currently having a very hard time scoring goals.
What does that mean for the direct duel? Quite simply: I don’t have a real favorite! Chelsea seems to be a little stronger to me, but at the same time you have to think about the number of goals they have conceded at home.
For this very reason, I decided to pick a real betting classic in my Chelsea Newcastle tip and say:
Both teams score!
