Koln – HSV Tip Bundesliga, Matchday 9 on Sunday, 02.11.2025 at 3:30 p.m.
In the previous season, 1. FC Cologne secured the championship in the 2nd division – but in both matches against Hamburger SV, the Billy Goats came away empty-handed.
In Sunday’s rematch, the Rothosen are now looking for a repeat. After all, the former Dino is once again behind its Rhineland rival in the table, but has recently been doing quite well on the pitch.
However, since the Billy Goats have been in the upper half of the table since the start of the season, the home team is favored by the best betting providers.
Meanwhile, I’m leaning towards a draw in my Cologne vs. Hamburg prediction. New customers with a similar idea should take advantage of the Betano voucher in view of the high odds.
There are good reasons to be somewhat skeptical of the Cologne vs. HSV predictions here – and to aim for the official underdogs with verve.
In the three Sunday games of the current season, the northerners have always scored so far – and have not conceded a single goal.
In addition, Hamburg traditionally do very well in Cologne. Cologne is one of their current favorite opponents, and they have not lost any of their last four competitive away games at Effzeh.
Koln – BVB Prediction & Bets
Although HSV have only scored in 3 of their 8 Bundesliga games so far, they will probably need to score a goal or two to get something out of the game in Cologne. Consequently, I’m going for BTS here!
However, if both teams do score in the first game on Sunday, Bet365 is holding back a little with odds of just over 1.50.
Since the promoted team scores sparingly, especially away from home, despite my general optimism, the Cologne HSV tip for under 2.5 goals seems like a good idea – at strong odds of around 2.25.
As a result, I logically arrive at a score prediction of 1:1 – which, as is always the case with score predictions, is really worthwhile with odds of 7.40 if successful.
What you need to consider when betting on Cologne vs. HSV
- Since the beginning of 2017, 1. FC Köln has won only one of nine competitive games against Hamburger SV (2D 6L): in January 2018 in what was their last Bundesliga meeting to date (2-0 A).
- Effzeh’s last home win came in October 2016 (3-0 in the Bundesliga) thanks to a hat-trick from Anthony Modeste.
- Since 2020, there has not been a single draw in 13 Bundesliga matches between two promoted teams (7 home wins, 6 away wins) – the last time this happened was in Union Berlin’s 1-1 draw in Paderborn in 2019.
- 1. FC Köln have won only one of their last six Bundesliga games (2D 3L): 1-0 at TSG Hoffenheim on matchday 6. However, with 11 points after eight games, Effzeh are still seven points better off than they were at the same stage in the 2023/24 relegation season.
- Hamburger SV lost their last two Bundesliga games, but before that they had three unbeaten Bundesliga games in a row (2W 1D). HSV last lost three league games in a row in November/December 2020 in the lower division (3L against Bochum, Heideheim, and Hannover).
Koln – HSV: AI tip & odds analysis
The Cologne HSV tip AI prediction is based much more heavily on the recommendations of the betting provider Bet365 than my published betting slip.
After analyzing all the relevant facts, the artificial intelligence can apparently well imagine that there will be another home win at the Rheinenergiearena – odds of 2.10.
At odds of just under 2.70, the AI sees the home team ahead at halftime – which would logically result in a start-to-finish victory for the cathedral city team.
Of course, the corresponding Cologne HSV prediction cannot do without the Rhineland’s rising star. After El Mala missed several chances to score against Bayern recently, an El Mala goal against Hamburg is now priced at around 3.40.
The best odds for Cologne vs. HSV
The Cologne HSV odds for the first Sunday game on the 9th matchday of the Bundesliga are once again clearly evident in the Bet 365 app, with the British betting giant expecting the promoted team to come out on top in this clash of the promoted teams:
The home team’s current odds of 2.10 promise the hosts a probability of success of almost 50 percent.
This means that bettors can expect a 3.2x return on their stake in the event of an away win, while a draw, which is also my favorite outcome, would even bring odds of 3.70!
Cologne vs. HSV match analysis:
The goal for both teams is to avoid slipping into the relegation battle. Hamburg is only three points behind Cologne going into this match; a win would give Merlin Polzin’s team a comfortable lead over the bottom three teams in the table.
Neither of these teams is accustomed to dictating the pace of games in the league. Cologne has a possession percentage of 40.72%, while HSV is only three places above them in this statistic. This underscores the fact that both teams prefer to let their opponents have the ball and play on the counterattack. This tactic will need to change this weekend.
Both Cologne and Hamburg rank in the top 7 in the Bundesliga in terms of the number of shots on goal directly after counterattacks.
However, the Billy Goats have scored three goals from these situations, while HSV have only managed one. As the away team, Polzin’s team is likely to have more opportunities for quick counterattacks, so they need to be more decisive.
Jakub Kamiński could make the difference here. He has been comfortable in a more advanced role for Cologne and has scored three goals. His combinations with Said El Mala are likely to cause problems for the visitors’ defense, but there are hardly any differences between the two teams ahead of this game.
Cologne form check
Cologne has defied the predictions at the start of the Bundesliga season. With 11 points, the Billy Goats are comfortably lodged in the upper half of the table.
The promoted team has already reached the number of points it had in the first half of the 2023/24 season after just eight matchdays. The hosts’ form is particularly remarkable considering their difficult schedule, in which they have only been beaten by top teams such as RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund.
At a time when set pieces are playing a decisive role, Cologne’s tally of 11 goals from open play underlines their commitment to attacking football.
Experienced striker Marius Bülter and rising star Saïd El Mala have had a significant impact in this regard, bolstering Cologne’s hopes of avoiding relegation.
However, there are still areas of vulnerability, as the team has conceded 52 shots on goal from corners and free kicks, the most in the league.
Despite Wednesday’s 4-1 home defeat to Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal, Cologne’s work ethic and ball control suggest that Effzeh can maintain the form they showed in the early stages of the season.
Lukas Kwasniok’s team’s home record, with only three defeats in their last 17 games, bodes well for the rest of the season.
HSV Form check
Hamburger SV’s return to the Bundesliga has gone better than expected, particularly due to their defensive organization. Nevertheless, HSV seems to lack punch in attack.
Although Merlin Polzin’s team ranks fourth in shots this season, it is only 11th in xG (expected goals), falling 3.99 short of expectations.
Without a win away from home and with only one goal scored, Hamburg is led defensively by center backs Luka Vušković and Daniel Heuer Fernandes.
The 32-year-old goalkeeper has saved 73% of the shots fired at him so far, surpassed only by Alexander Nübel and Gregor Kobel (both 74%).
Although the team played promisingly with two wins and a draw before the last two defeats, they need to improve in front of goal if they are to avoid the relegation battle.
