US Open 2024, 1st round, Monday, 26.08.2024, 21:30
He’s in a good mood, only loses to the absolute top stars and has big plans for New York. Jan-Lennard Struff may not be one of the favorites at the 2024 US Open, but an early exit is still not on his agenda!
The German is clearly the favorite at the start and doesn’t want to lose any energy unnecessarily. In my Djere Struff betting tip, however, I’ll tell you why I don’t expect a smooth result, but still see the favorite ahead
“There’s always a special atmosphere here, night sessions are always cool, great atmosphere, it’s just nice to be here again!” Jan-Lennard Struff has traveled to New York with great anticipation and big goals in his luggage.
Last year, he had just returned from a lengthy injury and failed to qualify. In the meantime, however, he has long since returned to his old familiar level.
The last time he made it past the first round in the Big Apple was in 2020, and of course he doesn’t want to let that happen to him. Although he failed right at the start in Cincinnati, a 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas was not really an embarrassing result
Before that in Gstaad, he delivered a veritable festival of breaks, the four matches, which went all the way to the semi-finals, contained the longest possible set five times. Nothing new, as Struff is well known for close matches.
That was also the case at Wimbledon, when we saw four tiebreaks in three matches and the German was defeated by Daniil Medvedev. Before I go any further into the analysis, I’ll put the tiebreak bet up for grabs.
At Bet365, we are offered odds of 1.63 if the first round in New York also includes a tiebreak. Jannik Sinner, Alex de Minaur, Stefanos Tsitsipas again, Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner and de Minaur again, Hubert Hurkacz once?
For more than half a year, Struff has only been eliminated when his opponents are really tough – with the exception of Quentin Halys, who recently beat him in the semi-finals in Gstaad.
What about duels against Laslo Djere, his first opponent at the US Open? Struff won twice in 2019, but also suffered a defeat on clay in 2021. In other words, the two have not met for three years.
Nevertheless, our bookmakers are more than optimistic from a German perspective, offering odds of 1.20 to 4.00. No wonder, because the Serb is not exactly in a good mood
In Winston, he let himself be duped 4-6, 1-6 by Zachary Svajda, and a defeat against Andres Andrade at the Challenger in Santo Domingo was not on the cards. Wasn’t the 29-year-old once on the verge of tapping into the world’s best?
He was, but now he’s just barely hanging on in the top 100. And yet: if we go back a year, we still remember very well that this Laslo Djere almost toppled Novak Djokovic!
He lost in five sets in the 3rd round of New York, incidentally the first time Djere had ever got that far. Or as I could also put it: This major is definitely not his favorite.
My Djere Struff tip
Laslo Djere has been going downhill for several months now and his ranking in the world rankings is now in triple figures. So I can’t really imagine that he has much chance of winning on Monday.
But: As strong as I think Jan-Lennard Struff is, the German is also known for close results, tiebreaks and victories with a few more sets than absolutely necessary. And that’s why I’ve combined all the facts and am betting:
Struff wins, but Djere also wins a set!
