The German U21 national team has achieved its goal at the 2025 European Championship: After Wednesday’s 3-0 win over France, the DFB juniors are in the final in Bratislava on Saturday.
Here, national coach Antonio Di Salvo’s team will face England today, as it did on the last matchday of Group B. A few days ago, Germany won 2-1 against the “Young Lions” with a B team at the end of the preliminary round.

England could become the first nation since Spain (2011, 2013) to defend their European Championship title. They also have the most semi-final appearances in the U21 European Championship, alongside Italy and Spain.
The British have won ten of their last 12 final tournament matches at the European Championship (1D, 1L). The “Young Lions” have the best pass completion rate (89.6%) and the highest possession rate (58.6%) in the current competition.
On June 28, 2023, the German U21 national team lost its final game in Group C of the European Championship preliminary round 0-2 to England. This meant that the DFB juniors were eliminated in the preliminary round with only one point from three games, finishing bottom of the table.
Exactly two years later, the German team, still coached by Antonio Di Salvo, has now reached the final of the 2025 European Championship.
In the 2025 semi-final, the German youngsters took a two-goal lead against France after just 14 minutes and ultimately ran out deserved 3-0 winners. This means that Germany’s U21 team has not lost any of its 20 international matches since being knocked out of the European Championship by England back then.
Germany is the only team in the current final tournament to have won all five of its matches. Only in the quarterfinals against Italy did victory come after extra time.
With 15 goals, Nick Woltemade and his teammates have the best offense of the tournament. Since the 2015 European Championship, the DFB juniors have reached the semifinals in four of five final tournaments and won the title twice.
Against France, coach Di Salvo’s team showed great efficiency in front of goal and could also rely on their strong goalkeeper Noah Atubolu.
England and Germany have already met in the final of the U21 European Championships in 1982 and 2009. In 1982, the title was decided over two games. The British prevailed after a 3-1 home win and a 2-3 defeat in the second leg.
In the 2009 finals, this pairing also occurred in the group stage. After 90 minutes, the score was 1-1. In the final, however, the DFB selection won 4-0.
In the current tournament, the British suffered their third defeat in 13 competitive games against the German youth team (5W, 5D). As already mentioned, the two nations also met at the 2023 European Championships.
Germany was eliminated after the preliminary round following a 0-2 defeat in their final group game. In seven test matches, the DFB team has narrowly come out on top with four wins and three defeats.
