Germany EM 2024 squad: Nomination & announcement
When is the German EM 2024 squad announcement?
Not only German soccer fans but also the country’s experts are eagerly awaiting a date on the DFB schedule for EURO 2024. The day the German EURO 2024 squad is announced.
When will national coach Julian Nagelsmann announce his 23-player squad for EURO 2024?
There is no date yet for the DFB squad announcement for EURO 2024. The only possible date communicated so far is “mid-May”. That could well be before the Bundesliga matchday, which is scheduled for May 18.
Nagelsmann won’t have much longer for the Germany EURO 2024 squad nomination, as the training camp starts on May 26.
But even then, things can still change, because: The final date for the European Championship squad announcement is June 7. This date for the nomination is set by UEFA. The 23-man squad must be registered with UEFA by then at the latest.
EURO 2024 kicks off seven days later in Munich with the opening match between Germany and Scotland
The possible Germany EURO 2024 squad
German EM 2024 squad: Which goalkeepers are in the squad
Julian Nagelsmann has a number of players in the 23-man German Euro 2024 squad who will definitely receive a nomination.
Manuel Neuer and Marc-Andre ter Stegen will definitely be included in the European Championship squad announcement. Who will be number 3 will only be decided in the course of the spring.
Originally Kevin Trapp would have been selected, but Oliver Baumann and Bernd Leno were nominated for the March internationals. It remains to be seen which of this trio will make the German squad for the European Championship
DFB EM squad nomination: The defense
Seven to eight places will be reserved for the defense in the Germany Euro 2024 squad.
Four players are likely to be nominated for the central defense, while three or four players are earmarked for the full-back positions.
Most of the players who will be included in the DFB squad nomination in May were already revealed in March
The central defense
In defense, Antonio Rüdiger has secured his place in the Germany Euro 2024 squad.
However, the question is who could play alongside the defensive boss in central defense – Jonathan Tah is currently considered to be set after the two international matches against France and the Netherlands.
Waldemar Anton, who was only invited to the DFB for the first time in March, could be included in the German squad for Euro 2024. He is likely to be the first back-up.
It remains to be seen who will take the fourth central defender spot in the DFB squad announcement. Robin Koch was nominated in March, but Nico Schlotterbeck could also have a small chance at the European Championship. His international experience would speak in his favor.
Niklas Süle, who was a regular under Nagelsmann in Hoffenheim and at Bayern, also still has a minimal chance of getting this European Championship ticket. The same applies to the young Italian internationals Malick Thiaw (Milan) and Yann Aurel Bisseck (Inter). Mats Hummels is unlikely to be an issue
The full-backs
On the outside positions in the back four, the space on the right is reserved for Joshua Kimmich. Nagelsmann has already announced this. His back-up will probably be Benjamin Henrichs, who can also play on the left.
Maximilian Mittelstädt has apparently won his place on the left flank. He was in the starting eleven against both France and the Netherlands and will almost certainly be named in the DFB EURO 2024 squad.
David Raum could be the big loser. Since Henrichs can play left or right back, he wouldn’t necessarily be needed as a back-up. Especially as central defender Jonathan Tah could also help out at right-back
Germany Euro 2024 squad: The midfield with returnee Toni Kroos
About ten places will be allocated to the midfield in the Germany European Championship squad announcement. This is also where there is the greatest competition.
Three to four players will be earmarked for the defensive midfield, while six players are planned for the attacking part of the team.
Defensive midfield
Toni Kroos appears to be the fixture in the center of midfield. He is the conductor in the DFB orchestra.
Alongside him, Robert Andrich will take on the role of “clearer”. Andrich was allowed to start against France and Holland in March.
Pascal Groß will probably be named as Andrich’s replacement in the DFB European Championship squad. And then it will be tight.
Bayern shooting star Aleksandar Pavlovic is likely to be absent from the squad announcement, however, as he would have little chance of playing. Especially as Kimmich could always move into the middle in an emergency and Waldemar Anton could also take over this position.
As a result, Dortmund’s Emre Can will most likely already be able to book his summer vacation.
And there may also be no place for Leon Goretzka in Germany’s Euro 2024 squad. Unless, of course, he’s planned to play more offensively. But there are also very few places left in attacking midfield
Offensive midfield
The attacking midfield in the Germany Euro 2024 squad is almost full.
There is no way around Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala. They are sure to be regulars.
In addition, captain Ilkay Gündogan is also very likely to play in the “ten” position. As a replacement, Thomas Müller will definitely be at EURO 2024. His qualities as a leader and joker are undisputed.
Who else could be in the Germany squad when it is announced in May? Chris Führich was involved in the March internationals, he could also pull on the German EURO 2024 jersey
Leroy Sane is also expected to be named in the squad. They don’t want to do without his experience and speed.
All other potential candidates will find it very difficult to get a place in the 2024 DFB European Championship squad. This mainly refers to Serge Gnabry, Karim Adeyemi and Julian Brandt.
Whereby: Brandt is probably the most likely to have small hopes, as he is very versatile in attack. But only if he comes to the fore with top performances at BVB over the next few months
DFB squad announcement: Who will play in attack
Only three places are likely to be reserved for the attack in the Germany Euro 2024 squad. And two of these three tickets have already been allocated.
Kai Havertz’s name will certainly appear in the DFB European Championship squad announcement. He is just as much a fixture in the center of attack as Niclas Füllkrug.
While “Fülle” acts as a classic striker, Havertz is the playful solution in the center of the attack. The last vacant spot is likely to go to Deniz Undav.
It will be difficult for Hoffenheim shooting star Maximilian Beier, who was nominated for the March internationals but did not feature.
Timo Werner and probably Serge Gnabry, who has often impressed as a “false 9”, also have no chance of making the Germany EURO 2024 squad
Possible Germany line-up for Euro 2024
With which line-up will Germany line up at Euro 2024? A clear system has not yet been established, but the back four seems sensible given the squad.
Kimmich will defend on the right, while the center-back pairing of Rüdiger/Tah will frame the left.
In midfield, Kroos would move alongside Gündogan and the more attacking Musiala, perhaps finally providing the necessary balance.
Florian Wirtz and Leroy Sane should then have (almost) complete freedom in attack, while Niclas Füllkrug – Germany’s big favorite in the betting to be the top scorer at Euro 2024 – should provide the goals up front.
DFB squad announcement: Who could be a surprise candidate for the European Championship?
Time and again, surprises make it into the final Germany squad for tournaments.
Waldemar Anton is having a strong year in Stuttgart and could end up as a surprise candidate in the German 2024 squad in defense. The same applies to Frankfurt’s Robin Koch.
Both have a chance in the European Championship, as the BVB defenders Schlotterbeck, Süle and Hummels are not consistently convincing.
Given the oversupply in midfield, any nominations for Grischa Prömel (TSG Hoffenheim) and Jan-Niklas Beste (Heidenheim) – although he was called up to the DFB squad in March – would be something of a surprise when it comes to nominations for EURO 2024.
Bremen striker Marvin Duksch would certainly be a player that not many would expect to be in the DFB squad for EURO 2024, but with his strike partner Niclas Füllkrug from their time at Werder, he could be an option if there are any absences.
Hoffenheim youngster Maxi Beier has also had a top season so far and would also be a surprise inclusion in the Germany Euro 2024 squad
