B04 coach Erik ten Hag will not have an easy time replacing Xabi Alonso. But he has a strong squad and the statistics also point to a successful debut on the Werkself bench.

Here are my own tips for the match between Bayer Leverkusen and Hoffenheim!
First tip: “B04 wins from behind” at extremely high odds of around 6.00 sounds quite feasible to me.
Last season, Leverkusen picked up 14 points in the Bundesliga after falling behind – the highest total in the league alongside other teams. This shows that Bayer has real comeback potential.
Second tip: “Leverkusen to win” at odds of 1.55 is a little more conservative, but very well-founded.
Hoffenheim won only 15% of all Bundesliga games last season when they were previously rated as underdogs by the bookmakers (3 wins, 6 draws, 11 defeats).

Three of Leverkusen’s last four Bundesliga home games have ended with at least two goals in the first half. So there are good reasons to believe that the game will pick up pace early on.

Leverkusen vs Hoffenheim match analysis:
The match between Leverkusen and Hoffenheim is sure to be a fiery affair! The Werkself are clear favorites going into their home game, especially after the summer and the signing of Ten Hag, but there is still a lot of work to be done to return to the glory days of Xabi Alonso.
Leverkusen haven’t looked particularly impressive defensively recently – they conceded 24 shots against Chelsea and 12 against Sonnenhof Großaspach in their pre-season friendlies – which shows that there are gaps in their defense that Hoffenheim could exploit.
Meanwhile, Andrej Kramaric and Fisnik Asllani have shown at Hoffenheim that they are dangerous in front of goal, so they will try to exploit the space behind Leverkusen’s midfield on Saturday.
All in all, an open game is to be expected. Leverkusen will look to control the game and create lots of chances, but Hoffenheim have enough quality to make it an exciting match.
Goals at both ends are therefore very likely, although I think that Leverkusen have a little more firepower overall.
Leverkusen form check
Xabi Alonso, who now coaches Real Madrid, led the club to its first Bundesliga championship, so Erik Ten Hag has big shoes to fill.
There have been some changes on the pitch: key players such as Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Granit Xhaka, who were important under Alonso, have left the club. The proceeds from these departures have been invested in new players.
Malik Tillman and Jarrel Quansah are the most expensive new signings, with eight other players joining for transfer fees.
Despite these extensive changes, Ten Hag is sticking with the 3-4-2-1 system that Leverkusen already played under Alonso. However, the team is likely to focus less on possession this season.
Like his predecessor, Ten Hag relies on aggressive pressing as soon as the ball is lost, but at the same time attaches great importance to quick transitions when the team regains possession.
In four friendly matches against established opponents, Leverkusen only managed an average of 45% possession – 13% less than last season’s league average.
The team therefore appears somewhat more compact, focusing on pace and efficiency rather than keeping the ball for long periods, which makes their play more dynamic and direct overall. This is how Ten Hag is trying to build on Alonso’s successes despite many changes.
Hoffenheim form check
Hoffenheim put in a weak performance last season and only narrowly avoided relegation via the relegation play-offs. Christian Ilzer, who joined the club in November, remains in charge.
He knows that his team needs a good start to the season. As Hoffenheim coach, Ilzer averaged just one point per game – the worst record for a coach at the club since Marco Kurz, who was in charge for just three months in 2013.
The Kraichgauers’ problems lay mainly in defense: on average, the team conceded two goals per game, with only Holstein Kiel’s opponents scoring more frequently.
Similar to Leverkusen, they will probably rely on a 3-4-2-1 system, which, however, brought little stability last season. The outside center backs will have a lot to do.
Arthur Chaves has been among the top 10% of central defenders in Europe in terms of tackles, interceptions, and blocks over the past twelve months. Against a Leverkusen side looking to exploit space, he will be in the spotlight and facing a busy afternoon.
