Neururer speaks candidly about the Club World Cup: “A truly magnificent idea”

Peter Neururer’s column on the start of the Club World Cup, the DFB Cup draw, and the winner of the Handball Champions League

Peter Neururer has already mentioned several times that he is unlikely to become a fan of the Club World Cup.

And even after the kickoff, the former coach is questioning the competition and ironically referring to it as “one of the greatest sporting events ever.”

The 70-year-old is more excited about the draw for the first round of the DFB Cup and the Champions League final in handball.

Neururer on the Club World Cup: “FIFA had a really great idea there.”

Dear soccer fans,

The Club World Cup has begun, one of the biggest sporting events in the world. Finally, it’s here. In an incredible top match, Al Ahly Cairo against Miami, 0-0. Okay, it’s not a result you would necessarily have expected, but it’s a special kind of soccer.

And then came the absolute shocker. On Sunday, the German champions, FC Bayern Munich, kicked off in Cincinnati against Auckland. Auckland, an incredible team from New Zealand. An amateur team. I don’t know what to say about the World Cup or anything like that, but these poor amateurs lost 10-0 to FC Bayern Munich.

A humiliation. Great encounters. Wonderful. The stadium was almost full, the people were thrilled. They had more fun than any other sporting event you could have experienced.

It’s great that Musiala is back and scored goals. It’s great that Müller scored again in FC Bayern Munich’s last move. But it’s a farce, it has little to do with soccer. What we had to watch was an absolute farce, in my opinion. But we’re not forced to watch it.

We need competitions, we need to earn money, everyone needs to earn money, and FIFA has come up with a brilliant idea. Let’s see how it goes. Bayern have a squad that is capable of achieving something really big, namely winning another title. Borussia Dortmund too.

Borussia Dortmund are playing Fluminense from Brazil on Tuesday. A top club, no question about it. It certainly sounds like bigger football, but let’s see what comes of it.

I find it more than problematic that we have to or are allowed to deal with such things during the summer break. I think it’s problematic for the development of soccer, but it seems that it’s all about money now. Unfortunately. Nevertheless, we’ll take it in stride, remain sporting, and stay committed to the cause.

Peter Neururer on the first round of the DFB Cup: “Always exciting, always good.”

About the DFB Cup. We are excited, dear betting fans, we are looking forward to the DFB Cup. It kicks off in mid-August and one of the absolute blockbuster matches in the Ruhr region is Rot-Weiß Essen against Borussia Dortmund.

The two clubs are also more or less friends with each other, so the atmosphere will be great. Hundreds of thousands of people are sure to turn up. A real highlight in soccer. Great, great. I’m looking forward to it too.

I’m also curious to see how VfL Bochum will perform in Berlin in the cup. The first round is always exciting and always good. And above all, I’m curious to see how Lok Leipzig will welcome Schalke 04. Last year in the regional league, they were a little frustrated by some strange decisions made by the DFB. And now Schalke 04 is coming.

No one knows where the team stands, but it’s great that these matches have been drawn and I’m really, really excited to see what happens. I’m looking forward to the first round of the DFB Cup.

Peter Neururer on Champions League victory in handball: “Absolute world class”

Dear soccer fans, we would like to congratulate SC Magdeburg, our handball team. Absolute world class. They won the Champions League in Cologne’s Lanxess Arena against the Füchse from Berlin, with a six-goal difference. 32:26, a great performance.

This is something worth highlighting, especially in the current situation, with soccer not exactly shining on either side of the ball. Great handball, top international class. My heartfelt congratulations to Magdeburg. Stay sporty.

Your Peter Neururer
