In the recent past, it has been customary for a third team, Atletico Madrid, to join the Spanish champions duel between Real and Barca.
Back in the 2013/2014 season, the annual rebellion culminated in Atletico taking the title. A feat that the Colchoneros were unable to repeat until 2021.
In the 2020/21 season, Atleti took advantage of the top duo’s fickle performances and once again ascended to the La Liga throne. It was Atletico’s 11th league title in total
Since then, however, Atletico have returned to their natural habitat – in the chasing pack behind Barca and Real. In 2022 and 2023, they only managed 3rd place on both occasions, while last season they only finished 4th.
