It’s exactly what you’d classify as “David vs Goliath”! Paris St. Germain play in the quarter-finals of the Coupe de France on Wednesday, and some fans will first have to google who they’re actually up against.
The opponent is from the 4th division, but the game will be played at the large Roazhon Park in Rennes. The bookmakers’ prediction in my Stade Briochin PSG betting tip? The favorite will do it easily. My prediction: The underdog will put up a good fight and “win” the game with a handicap of +3.
Is it annoying or pleasing for an amateur club to have the best team in the country waiting for them? I’ll be honest: just a few days ago, I had never heard of Stade Briochin and had to get my bearings geographically.
Saint-Brieuc, as it is called in the local language, is a French municipality in Brittany, not far from Rennes. So it’s not surprising that Wednesday’s cup match is being held at Roazhon Park, which is located there.
Stade Briochin are in the fourth division there, and they don’t even play in the top flight. Most recently, the club won 6-2 against Granville, losing 2-1 to Les Herbiers VF a few days earlier – just to give you an idea of the daily grind the club has to deal with.
It is the first time in the club’s history that a cup quarter-final is on the agenda! An absolutely historic day, and one that Briochin richly deserves.
The first four rounds were still against small, unknown opponents. 2:0 against Lannion, 4:0 against Uzel Merleac, 3:0 against Stade Paimpol and 5:4 against Saint-Malo, clear victories and thrilling wins, both were there.
In the 5th round, the supporters then experienced the first big surprise when Le Havre were defeated 1:0. The home games were to remain, and they proved to be a great advantage.
The nerves held against Annecy, and for the second time a penalty shoot-out was won 5:4. The score was 1:1 after 90 and 120 minutes, and this goal was Briochin’s first in the competition.
A second was to come in the round of 16, but let’s be honest: a 2:1 win against Nice is still something to celebrate! An absolute cup sensation, and when it was written, there was of course plenty of drama.
Hugo Boudin was the big hero, as he not only scored the equalizer in the 88th minute after falling behind, but also sent an entire region into a collective frenzy of joy in the seventh minute of stoppage time.
Two goals conceded in the entire competition is of course extremely strong. Should Briochin actually manage to get away with conceding a maximum of one goal against PSG, high odds of 4.05 await you, and not only at Betano.
In any case, the fourth division team, who will face PSG for the first time ever on Wednesday, are of course the glaring underdogs in this match, which is reflected in odds of 1.10 to 27.0.
Or as you might say in Paris: We have everything to lose, because everyone is expecting a thumping victory! PSG still have big plans for this season, with the Champions League title at the top of the list once again, of course.
The championship can no longer be taken away from the stars from the capital, and since they have reached the final of the cup eight times since 2015 and won seven times in the end, embarrassments are really not on the agenda.
Although the team failed to reach the last 16 in 2022 and 2023, their opponents were almost on a par with Nice and Marseille. But PSG came close to going home in round five!
At the start of the competition, they won by the skin of their teeth against Lens, with the favorites prevailing 5:4 on penalties. This was followed by a 4:2 win against Espaly and a 2:0 win against Le Mans.
Relatively unadorned results, with one or two stars not even making an appearance. The league continues soon with a match against Lille, while Liverpool await in the Champions League on March 5.
Why am I mentioning this so explicitly? Quite simply because I can well imagine that not the top eleven will line up against Briochin! The Parisians, who are unbeaten in the league, are likely to rotate a bit, which makes an assessment extremely difficult.
Paris St. Germain must not show any weakness on Wednesday, a stumble against a fourth division team would be incredibly embarrassing. The game is at Roazhon Park – and PSG have only won one of their last five matches there! Of course, their opponents Rennes were much more challenging.
The underdogs have already knocked Le Havre and, above all, Nice out of the competition and showed a strong defensive side. Now, of course, the best team in the country has arrived, but they haven’t yet been able to show exactly that in the cup.
I expect the visitors to make a few changes and not every star will start. It’s the game of the millennium for Briochin, there’s absolutely nothing to lose. So the bottom line is:
