The planning for the Championship has been underway for a long time. Southampton FC could not hold their own in the Premier League, with just two wins to their name. Is there no hope at all of adding success number three at the weekend?
At first glance, my Tottenham Southampton tip doesn’t sound like it, but: the Spurs are really not in the best of form. That’s why I’m going to tell you why I’m betting on “both teams to score” in this game.
Two wins, four draws and 24 defeats, 22 goals scored and 71 goals conceded? Southampton FC knew it would be difficult to avoid relegation, but they didn’t want to go down without a fight.
The Saints didn’t score a goal in their first four games. 1-0 to Everton and 2-1 to Ipswich, in the only two wins, the decisive goal didn’t come until just before the final whistle – so it wouldn’t have taken much for them to go the whole season without a win.
In this respect, the only thing left to do in the coming weeks is to say goodbye in a reasonably decent way. After eleven defeats in twelve games (the one in between was the 2-1 win), the team recently fought hard to get a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace.
1-2 against Wolverhampton and 1-3 against Liverpool when they took the lead? I really can’t blame the team for not fighting. 1-2-12, whether played at home or away, it doesn’t matter.
With 31 goals conceded, the defense is, compared to their 40 at home, at least a bit “safer” when playing away. The Saints have already gone into the break trailing in nine away games.
In the first leg of the season, they were already 5-0 down after the first 45 minutes against Tottenham! So if you want to bet that the Spurs will also be leading after the first half this Sunday, you can get odds of 1.75 in the Bet365 app.
Boredom was definitely not an issue in recent years, whenever the two clubs faced each other directly. 0:5, 3:3, 1:4, 3:2, 1:1, 1:2, 2:5, 2:3, the most recent results clearly show what the Southampton defense has had to endure.
But: Before the 0-5, Southampton scored 17 times in a row against Tottenham. They last lost an away game to the North Londoners in October 2014 without scoring themselves.
But given the situation in the table, the odds for the weekend don’t surprise me at all. Our PayPal bookmakers are pricing a win for the guests at 7.25, while the hosts are priced at 1.37.
This is actually a high value for a home game against the bottom-placed team, but Tottenham have only themselves to blame. Their own expectations are somewhere in Europe, but the reality is only 14th place.
home wins in the last five months? One, a 1-0 win against Manchester United. A third of all home games end in victory, with only 30 goals scored a positive result.
For four games, also a new negative streak, Spurs have not scored before half-time. If you bet on this and expect an offensive nil for the time being on Sunday, you can get odds of 2.85 at Betano.
Is there a risk that Tottenham will give the game away against Southampton? Just a few days later, the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final against Frankfurt takes place – and only by winning internationally can they secure a place in Europe for 2025/26!
As a Tottenham Hotspur fan, you probably just want this 2024/25 season to be over as quickly as possible – and anyone supporting Southampton will have very similar thoughts.
The Saints’ dire statistics were perhaps to be expected, but the Spurs’ certainly were not. Rarely have the North Londoners been so bad on the road, they have only kept clean sheets at home (only five wins) on two occasions.
Although it’s all academic for the visitors, Tottenham will not be able to achieve anything more in the league. So I’ve decided to suggest the following classic to you:
Both Teams Score!
