In the end, it was, as expected, a USA Mexico tip for the final. In this edition of the Gold Cup, the “usual suspects” have prevailed once again – even without their regular players.

Keep an eye on players like Yunus Musah, Christian Pulisic, and Timothy Weah, all of whom are important cornerstones of the team and are not in the squad. And that is clearly noticeable.
Their tournament performances so far have been anything but convincing. In the quarter-finals against Costa Rica, they only narrowly avoided elimination, with the US team scraping through on penalties.
The semi-final against Guatemala was also hard work. The team does not look well-rehearsed and in many phases lacks the creative spark that players like Pulisic usually bring to the table.
In this form, it will be extremely difficult against a stable, physically strong and tactically disciplined team like Mexico. There is a particular lack of punch in key areas.
How can I tell that there is a lot of respect between the US and Mexico? It’s simple: nine of the last ten direct encounters have ended with fewer than 3.5 goals – that speaks for itself.
Both teams approach each other with great caution, hardly anyone takes any risks. Especially in a Gold Cup final, avoiding mistakes is more important than putting on a show.
