Not much contact with Brazil’s top clubs? That’s probably changed for some of you thanks to the Club World Cup! The Samba kickers caused quite a stir in the new FIFA tournament.
I now have an absolute cracker from Serie A to analyze, because my Flamengo Fluminense tip features two Club World Cup participants. The bookmakers have their favorites – and so do I. So now I’ll tell you what I think will make it a home win!
One team was eliminated in the round of 16 with a 2-4 loss to FC Bayern, while the other had to concede defeat to Chelsea FC with a 0-2 loss in the semifinals. In other words, Flamengo and Fluminense ended up congratulating each other on a great tournament.
The Club World Cup was a resounding success for the Brazilian teams and should now attract more European soccer fans to South America. I’m going to take a closer look at Flamengo Rio de Janeiro first.
Funny: During the group stage of the Club World Cup, this club managed to defeat the eventual champions, Chelsea, 1:3. Five goals against the Blues and FCB? Impressive!
At first glance, it’s hard to believe what’s happening in the domestic league. First of all, let’s note that as second in the table, everything is fine, especially since they have played one game less than leaders Cruzeiro.
The offensive average is exactly two goals per game. Not exactly a remarkable statistic, but in a rather defensive league, it’s impressive, and so Flamengo has the best attack in the competition with 26 goals this season.
Have they conceded any goals? Yes, but only FIVE! Only once, in the 1-2 defeat against Cruzeiro, did they concede two goals in a game. Also important for you to know: they have conceded only one goal at home, and that was in their first match, a 1-1 draw against Internacional.
6-0 against Juventude, 4-0 against Corinthians, 1-0 against Bahia, 5-0 against Fortaleza, and 2-0 against Sao Paulo – the results after that 1-1 draw are impressive. It’s only logical that I have a “clean sheet” bet against Fluminense in mind.

I have to briefly include a direct comparison here, and you’ll see why in a moment. In nine of the last twelve matches against Fluminense, Flamengo has not conceded a goal.
In addition, no more than two goals have been scored in the last seven home games against their upcoming rivals. The “under 2.5 goals” bet could therefore be exciting, with odds of 1.57 making it just about worthwhile.
One defeat in the last 13 encounters against Fluminense is also interesting. This underlines the home side’s status as favorites, which they will definitely hold on Monday night.
The average odds are 1.65 to 5.25. But isn’t Fluminense the team that beat Inter Milan 2-0 in the round of 16 of the Club World Cup? That’s true, but their own league is a different story.
The mood in the Tricolor camp could be better ahead of the big Rio derby. A few days ago, they suffered their first home defeat of the season, losing 2-0 to Cruzeiro, which means they are now further behind the leaders.
70 percent possession, 28 shots, 7-2 corners – it was one of those defeats that leaves you wondering why it happened. Fluminense knows that an away game awaits, which is not their favorite discipline.
They have already lost three times away from home, twice without scoring. The fact that the team has never lost two games in a row gives cause for hope, but so far this has been down to their home strength.
Fluminense has scored only one goal away from home in the first half. Accordingly, if you want to bet on “No goals before halftime,” you’ll have to settle for Betano odds of 1.36.
You have to take a stand in Rio: does your heart beat for Flamengo or Fluminense? The strong Club World Cup participants couldn’t be more different. It quickly became clear that the home side’s defense was virtually impenetrable.
Flamengo is absolutely solid, and home games are always a great bet. Fluminense are traveling to Rio somewhat frustrated after their defeat against leaders Cruzeiro, and their away form is not good.
As history (several clean sheets) also favors the home team, I’m going to make it easy for myself and say:
