The world no. 1 battled his way into the tournament with a 7-6, 7-6, 6-1 win over Nicolas Jarry, followed it up with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Tristan Schoolkate. In both matches, he only allowed one break in total.
He did concede another one against Marcos Giron, but Sinner had no problems in winning the next match 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. Holger Rune, on the other hand, was not only involved in five-set matches against Miomir Kecmanovic (6-7, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4) but also in round 1 against Zhang Zhizhen (4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4). Against Matteo Berrettini, it was almost a clear-cut 7-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6.

Learner Tien is a name to watch out for! The 19-year-old qualifier from the USA knocked out Camilo Ugo Carabelli (4-6, 7-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4) and Daniil Medvedev (6 -3, 7-6, 6-7, 1-6, 7-6) in five sets, then won 7-6, 6-3, 6-3 against Corentin Moutet. Impressively, he won four of the tiebreaks.
Now Tien will play against Lorenzo Sonego, and is only just behind at Interwetten with odds of 2.20 to 1.65. The Italian has also already won a few sets, sending Stan Wawrinka (6-4, 5-7, 7-5, 7-5), Joao Fonseca (6-7, 6-3, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3) and Fabian Marozsan (6-7, 7-6, 61, 6-2) home. With three breaks allowed, he showed himself to be strong on service.

This Australian Open is going swimmingly for Alex Michelsen. The US American first knocked out Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-5, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, then won 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 against James McCabe and 6-3, 7-6, 6-2 against Karen Khachanov. Strong performances by the 20-year-old, who is now the underdog against Alex de Minaur (3.90 to 1.25).
The Australian has a home game and has already beaten Botic van de Zandschulp (6-1, 7-5, 6-4), Tristan Boyer (6-2, 6-4, 6-3) and Francisco Cerundolo (5-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-3). But be warned: the head-to-head against Michelsen is 1-1!
