Copa America, quarter-finals, Sunday, 07.07.2024 at 00:00
The Copa America 2024 is now entering the hot phase. The quarter-finals are coming up.
Colombia and Panama face each other in the penultimate match. It is already the classic David versus Goliath duel.
The differences could hardly be greater. On the one hand, the Cafeteros, who finished ahead of Brazil as group winners and have an outside chance of winning the title
But it will take a lot of effort to achieve success in this tournament like in 2001. After all, the Canaleros are no pushovers.
They lost 3:1 to Uruguay on the first day of group play. Nevertheless, the attacking moments were there at times. Defensively, they are also in a good position.
Therefore, my Colombia Panama betting tip assumes an advantage for the South Americans, but it won’t be a walk in the park
The forecast of the betting providers?
When we look at the Colombia Panama odds, it’s immediately clear where the race is headed. Coach Nestor Lorenzo’s team are the clear favorites.
If they live up to their role and win by at least two goals, the European Championship betting providers, who of course also cover the Copa America, are offering odds of just over 1.90.
The “both teams meet” odds, which are over 2.00 with almost all betting providers, show that it is unlikely to be evenly matched.
Analysis: Colombia vs Panama
But why actually? Do coach Thomas Christiansen’s men have to hide? Not really, if we look at their performances so far.
They have scored at least once in all three tournament matches so far. Against the USA and Bolivia, they have even scored over 1.5 goals each
Their opponents from the Amazon have not always been solid defensively either. They conceded one goal against Peru, who are actually so weak offensively.
Their showpiece is their offense. The Colombians have scored two or more goals in six of their last eight international matches alone.
The two times they failed to do so were in the final group game against Brazil and Spain, who are one of the tournament favorites at EURO 2024.
Odds analysis
Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that the Cafeteros will once again set off some offensive fireworks.
Tipwin’s betting providers offer odds of around 1.50 for your Colombia Panama bet if Lorenzo’s team scores at least twice.
The forecast is slightly higher at Bwin, who predict odds of around 2.10 if the Colombians score in both halves.
And the Canaleros? What can be expected of them? Betano’s handicap betting offers odds of around 1.80 if they manage to hold on to a hypothetical two-goal lead
Will Colombia live up to their role as favorites?
At the last Copa America, the Cafeteros failed a little because of their own arrogance. You probably remember
Against Uruguay, defender Yerry Mina scored an important penalty. He celebrated with a little dance.
They faced Argentina in the semi-final. Again, the decision had to come from the spot. Mina stepped up again. He missed against Emiliano Martinez. Lionel Messi shouted from afar “Why aren’t you dancing?”
Hopefully the team will have learned from this. If they continue to be humble and focus on their own game, nothing stands in the way of a semi-final
Is the canal closed now?
Which is certainly also due to the opponent. Coach Thomas Christiansen’s squad already have an impressive record at the Copa America.
In 2016, they were eliminated in the preliminary round, picking up just three points. Now they have two wins behind Uruguay in a complicated but evenly matched group.
However, it is unlikely to be enough for more. The Cafeteros are a similarly tough opponent to the Celeste in the first group game.
However, the return of Adalberto Carrasquilla, one of the key players in midfield after his yellow card suspension, could provide hope
This is not the first time Colombia and Panama have faced each other. Until the mid-2000s, both nations were still represented in the Gold Cup.
Back then, North and South America shared a competition. The Gold Cup is now only for teams from North and Central America
Interestingly, the Canaleros won both games back then, once in the group and once in the semi-final play-off. It should be noted, however, that the Colombians sent a B team in 2005.
The more recent comparisons from five years ago are a better benchmark. Back then, the Cafeteros won 3:0.
My tip:
My prediction for this quarter-final in the Copa America is similar. The Colombians are the clear favorites here.
Even though the Canaleros have admittedly won my heart at this tournament and shown good signs, they should now be finished.
My Colombia Panama betting tip is therefore: The Cafeteros win and less than 3.5 goals are scored
