Copa Libertadores 2024, Wednesday, 08.05.2024
In the group stage of the Copa Libertadores, a few games will take place on Tuesday night, in which a small preliminary decision could be made with regard to the names of the future round of 16 finalists.
I wouldn’t want to go quite that far in this clash, but if my Palestino Flamengo tip actually comes true, the Brazilians could soon find themselves in dangerous waters
Yes, the start to the season for the “Ruby Reds” is certainly impressive. After the first five matchdays in the Brazilian Serie A, they have a positive record of two wins and two draws with just one defeat.
However, a good performance in the Copa Libertadores is no less important for the board of directors and they need to be wide awake right from the start of the season to avoid being eliminated in the preliminary round.
So far, however, the group stage has not gone according to plan, and Flamengo RJ now face a small fateful match on matchday 4, which is the only way to describe the upcoming clash against Palestino. At the very least, the Brazilians should definitely not lose
If Palestino win, the Chileans will overtake them. And as leaders Bolivar could plan ahead for the knockout phase from Wednesday onwards if they win again, Flamengo should not be hoping for too much help from the Bolivians from now on.
The first leg against Palestino was just over a month ago and gives us an initial indication of what we can expect from this game.
On that occasion, Flamengo won 2-0 on goals at the legendary Maracana. And with an xG value of 2.67 in contrast to the 0.94 of the Chileans, the result was also absolutely fine in its height
I agree with the sports betting providers that the Brazilians should also be favored in the second leg. However, I doubt that the FRJ win odds of 1.52 have been hit well.
After all, the Chileans have developed well in recent years and it can therefore be strongly assumed that a higher odds for the visitors to win would have been more appropriate here in order to accurately reflect the actual balance of power.
Palestino also picked up plenty of confidence ahead of next Wednesday in their stunning 3:1 win over Millonarios at the end of April.
Even then, betting providers such as Sunmaker underestimated the “SADP’s” capabilities. Despite the odds, the hosts, who were considered weaker, clearly prevailed on matchday 3 at the Stadio Francisco Sánchez Rumoroso.
Will the club, once founded by Palestinian immigrants in Santiago de Chile in 1920, now also manage to celebrate their second consecutive CL home win as underdogs? Now even against a much more prestigious club?
It would of course be a medium to major disaster for such a demanding and tradition-conscious club if Flamengo were to be eliminated in the preliminary round.
It would also be completely unexpected, as the Ruby Reds have been competing in the Copa Libertadores without interruption since 2018 and are now aiming to advance from the group stage for the eighth time in a row, even as runners-up if necessary.
But be warned, Flamengo are not really convincing away from home at the moment, either at national or international level.
Last weekend against Bragantino (1:1) and previously at Palmeiras (0:0), they were unable to celebrate a Serie A away win.
And in the current group stage of the Copa Libertadores, they have also failed to overcome Millonarios (1:1) or Bolivar (1:2) at their respective venues
From a sober point of view, I find the double chance 1X odds of 2.62 from the bookmaker Betway much more interesting than the FRJ win odds of around 1.52 currently being traded in reverse.
In general, the Betway app is an excellent tool for any sports betting fan who has a weakness for South American ball magic.
This is because the bookmaker giant makes an extensive betting offer available to its customers on its user-friendly application for cell phones, which covers almost the entire top divisions of South America as well as intercontinental club competitions.
Conclusion: This is by no means an easy task that the Brazilians have been set on Tuesday night. The Chileans could well embarrass them with one or two decisive offensive moves.
Of course, there is a lot at stake for both clubs, but the pressure is almost exclusively on the Rio de Janeiro side, who won the first leg 2-0 in their colorful ruby red shirts.
It would therefore come as no surprise to me if the FRJ collapsed under this high pressure of expectation. After all, their opponents are capable of surprisingly strong performances and are in a position to sell themselves much better than in their guest appearance at the Maracana a month ago.
My Palestino Flamengo tip: Double chance 1X.
