However, Sydney Lohmann’s middle name can’t really be a coincidence: Matilda! The story behind her second name is even more curious: because Sydney is a name for both boys and girls, Lohmann’s parents had to give her a second name. “Matildas” is the nickname given to the players of the Australian national soccer team.
The reason for this nickname is the Australian folk song “Waltzing Matilda,” which is considered the unofficial national anthem. So it was already clear when she was named that Sydney Matilda Lohmann would become a soccer star.

She told Vogue how she discovered her passion for the sport at the tender age of four: “From an early age, I did all kinds of sports with my dad and tried everything. We threw Frisbee in the street, played a bit of tennis and then soccer too.
A neighbor watched them and struck up a conversation. As it happened, he was the soccer coach for the club in the neighboring village and took little Sydney, who was only four years old, to SV Lengenfeld, where she learned the basics of soccer.
She later moved to SC VfL Kaufering, where she played in a team with boys and was always challenged. She then moved to SC Fürstenfeldbruck and joined the youth department of FC Bayern Munich for the 2016/17 season.

In August 2016, at just 16 years of age, Lohmann made her debut for Bayern’s second women’s team in the 2nd Bundesliga. Less than a year later, in March 2017, she played for the Bundesliga team.
Since 2014, Sydney Lohmann has played for all of Germany’s U-national teams. She made her debut for the senior national team in November 2018 at the age of just 18.
She was called up by national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg for the 2022 European Championship, as well as for the 2023 World Cup.

Studying: Preparing for life after a career
Unlike men, women’s salaries are not enough to build up a large fortune during their careers. Most female soccer players therefore prepare for life after soccer alongside their professional careers. Sydney Lohmann is one of them.
A normal degree program is not feasible for someone who trains several times a day. And even though Lohmann lists physiotherapist, chef, or a degree in geography as her career aspirations on the FC Bayern website, she has opted for a distance learning degree in social work.
She can watch the lectures when she has time alongside her training and take the exams when it suits her.
She doesn’t yet know exactly what she wants to do with her degree, but is considering combining sport with a career in the social sector. She currently finds her studies a pleasant change from her everyday life in soccer.

Sydney Lohmann does not reveal much about her private life in public. In the FC Bayern team introduction, she talks about her favorite food, pizza and Asian cuisine, and her favorite travel destinations, Peru and the Atlantic coast of France.

She does not reveal whether she has someone special in her life – and if so, who. Nor does she reveal whether she might have a female friend. Some rumors suggest a relationship with her colleague Laura Freigang. However, this has not been officially confirmed.

Sydney Lohmann and Jamal Musiala
Sydney Lohmann also takes responsibility off the pitch: Together with her Bayern teammate Jamal Musiala, she has been captain of the FC Bayern Kids Club since the 2022/23 season. Lohmann and Musiala took over this role from Bayern veteran Thomas Müller.
Lohmann will work with Jamal Musiala to plan events for the youngest fans of the German record champions. The children will have the opportunity to experience their soccer stars up close.
