Freiburg – Basel Tip Europa League, Matchday 1 on Wednesday, 09/24/2025 at 9:00 p.m.
Derby vibes for the EL kickoff in Freiburg – and in the very best atmosphere. The Breisgauers have managed to turn a worrying start to the Bundesliga into one that leaves us wanting much more.
However, it’s not just the home team’s recent performances that are whetting the appetite for more, but also the Bet-at-Home deposit bonus, which is an excellent potential profit-boosting addition to my Freiburg Basel tip.
Because if the Breisgau offense fires on all cylinders as it did recently in the matches against VfB and Werder, then nothing should stand in the way of a successful Europa League start today. Basel shouldn’t be able to match the firepower of SCF anyway.
There are some interesting, albeit not decisive, facts about this encounter here – we’ll get down to business below!
The club from beautiful Breisgau and Basel have never played each other in a competitive match before.
Interestingly, however, Freiburg’s last encounters with Swiss teams date back to the 2001/02 UEFA Cup. At that time, the Sportclub lost 0-1 at home to St. Gallen, but secured their place in the overall standings with a 4-1 away win.
Freiburg – Basel Prediction & Betting
My personal Freiburg Basel prediction includes a tip in the Bwin app, which promises odds of around 2.85 if successful.
Freiburg winning and scoring at least three goals is the logical conclusion based on the inflated combination betting odds and the accuracy the Sportclub has shown in recent weeks.
And yes, Basel should concede that many goals. Especially since they conceded two goals to a second division team like Etoile-Carouge in the national cup competition a few days ago and only advanced on penalties.
What you need to consider when betting on Freiburg vs. Basel
- Freiburg has scored at least one goal after halftime in 11 of its last 12 games.
- In Freiburg’s last eight games, at least one goal was scored before halftime.
- Three of Basel’s last five wins in all competitions have included a red card for the opposition.
- In nine of Basel’s last 11 games, both teams have scored.
Freiburg – Basel: AI tip & odds analysis
The Sportclub has won its last four home games in this competition, scoring a total of 14 goals.
This has clearly impressed the Freiburg Basel AI prediction, as our digital betting friend attests to the selection “Freiburg win with HC -1” at odds that gravitate closely around 2.77, giving it very good chances of success.
And indeed, a possible 2-0, 3-1 or even a higher score for the Black Forest team is also the most likely outcome in my opinion.
Our AI program also recommends Igor Matanovic as a possible goalscorer at odds of around 2.30 – but I would disagree with this. The young Croatian was injured for a long time and, although he impressed in the last home game, he has only played a total of 19 minutes in the Bundesliga.
In comparison, I much prefer the selection 1st goal scorer: Vincenzo Grifo at odds of around 7.10. The Italian was the man of the match against Bremen at the weekend with two points and also scored the 1-0.
What’s more, Vincenzo Grifo was involved in nine goals (6 goals, 3 assists) in 14 UEFA Europa League games for Freiburg between 2022 and 2024.
The best odds for Freiburg vs. Basel
Freiburg welcomes FC Basel – a game that promises tactical finesse on the pitch and plenty of excitement on the betting slip.
Various old and new sports betting providers, led by Betano and Oddset, are currently offering the best odds: 1.73 for a home win for Freiburg, 4.10 for a draw, and 4.30 if Basel pulls off an upset away from home.
Particularly appealing: Freiburg is considered the favorite, but the Swiss bring international punch and could cause a surprise or two.
It is precisely this mixture of certainty and underdog potential that makes the game so exciting for a Freiburg Basel tip – perfect for anyone who wants to spice up their betting slip with clever tips.
Freiburg vs Basel match analysis:
Freiburg has proven to be strong internationally and, despite having less possession, created scoring chances with an xG value of 2.42 over the weekend – a clear indication that the Breisgauers can be extremely dangerous with just a few passes.
Set pieces in particular could make the difference on Wednesday.
Basel, on the other hand, has been impressive in its domestic league recently, but is likely to have to chase the ball a lot against Freiburg.
Freiburg’s midfield is too strong, and the excitement of playing in the Europa League is too great for them to hold back here.
The hosts are likely to dictate the pace from the start and control the game, while the Swiss will have to react.
However, there is still a question mark over the line-up: Freiburg could be without Junior Adamu, who was substituted due to injury after scoring against Bremen.
Basel will also be without Bénie Traore (leg injury) and Finn van Breemen (knee injury), who were both already sidelined for the narrow cup win against Étoile Carouge.
This could slightly shift the balance of power, but overall I still see Freiburg as the favorites to play the more active and dangerous role in this encounter.
Freiburg form check
Freiburg goes into this game with momentum. The Breisgau Brazilians have won their last two Bundesliga games in a row, including a 3-0 win over Werder Bremen – their biggest win since February.
They have also performed strongly internationally, winning their last four home games in the Europa League, including a 5-0 win over Olympiakos.
Their form in domestic competitions has lagged behind, however, with four defeats in their last seven Bundesliga home games (two wins, one draw).
But I believe this negative trend has come to an end, even in my Freiburg Basel prediction! With their convincing away win at Werder Bremen, the Black Forest team seems to have finally overcome its early-season struggles.
Basel form check
Basel, on the other hand, is starting the new 2025/26 Europa League season with mixed feelings.
After winning the Super League, the Swiss qualified for the Champions League playoffs for the first time in eight years, but after a 1-3 aggregate defeat to Copenhagen, they now have to compete in the second tier of international soccer.
The start of the season was also bumpy in the domestic league! But in the meantime, they have won four of their last five Super League games.
In addition, FCB can build on positive European Cup experiences. Memories of the semi-finals of the 2022/23 UEFA Europa Conference League remain fresh, and this return to the international stage could provide additional motivation.
However, I consider the strong sports club from Breisgau to be the wrong opponent to celebrate an away win on the first matchday.
