At the 2026 World Cup, Ecuador won 2-1 against the DFB selection in the preliminary round with Sebastian Beccacece on the bench. Then, however, the 0:2 in the sixteenth final against Mexico was the end of the line. After that, Beccacece vacated his post as national coach. Now Ecuador has found a new coach: Marcelo Gallardo takes over at the South Americans. The 50-year-old has signed a contract until June 2030. Gallardo had coached the traditional Argentine club River Plate until February 2026.
