Australian Open today – matches from 1/17
The third round of the Australian Open is on the program and with it the round of 16. 32 players are still in the running. While in the men’s tournament only Alexander Zverev is still flying the German flag, there are still two aces in the women’s tournament.
One of them will serve on Thursday night, Laura Siegemund will open the seventh day of the tournament. The 36-year-old managed the coup against the Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng, the favorite to 1:01 Chinese woman went down to Siegemund.
Siegemund will now face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. This time, she is only a slight underdog at our top tennis betting providers. Alongside her is Eva Lys, who has seized her chance and only just made the squad. She will serve again on Saturday.
Zverev, on the other hand, is playing today. I have written a separate preview article about this match for you, feel free to take a look! After two commanding victories, he faces Jacob Fearnley, an unknown face for Zverev. Find out what else the day has in store in today’s Australian Open tips!
Australian Open Tips Today – 17.01.2025 Preview of Day 7
I am confident that Zverev will go far at the Australian Open, maybe even all the way to the title. His forehand is stable, physically he is fit and so far he has not yet lost a service game, earned 31 break points and has yet to need a tiebreak.
It is clear that the big names are yet to come, but if we look at Zverev purely from a playing point of view, he is as complete as ever! You can read my condensed assessment of his third round game below. I also have a few other tidbits ready.
In the men’s tournament, I have picked out the matches between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. The record Grand Slam winner has a tough opponent in Tomas Machac, while the Spanish double Wimbledon champion has an easier task ahead of him against Nuno Borges.
My Australian Open forecast today is rounded off by another game from the women’s tennis world. None other than the world number one, Aryna Sabalenka, is playing at the Rod Laver Arena.

Australian Open Tips today 17.01.: Pavlyuchenkova – Siegemund (01:00 clock)
That was a real surprise, that Siegemund took Zheng out of the field. But the German showed a strong game from start to finish. With her powerful style of play, I want more! And she had already won the last duel against Pavlyuchenkova.
That was eight years ago, though. In their first clash in 2007, Siegemund also won a set. The Russian didn’t win her first few matches in Melbourne either and conceded seven breaks in round two, whereas Siegemund only conceded two against Zheng. So Siegemund should be able to win a set!
Our expert tip: Set win Siegemund
Australian Open betting today 17.01.: Sabalenka – Tauson (01:30)
Tatjana Maria missed out on a place in the third round against a strong Clara Tauson. But she shouldn’t be too disappointed. It would most likely have been over in round three anyway, because Sabalenka is now waiting for the Dane. The world number one has already won the major for the last two years.
She defeated Sloane Stephens and Jessica Maneiro in straight sets in the first two rounds. But watch out! Tauson is a good server. It won’t be that easy for Sabalenka to get break after break, especially since the Belarusian hasn’t served flawlessly for the entire duration of the first rounds. So I don’t expect a quick victory.
Our expert tip: Over 18.5 games
Australian Open betting today 17/01: Fearnley – Zverev (03:30)
After the two highly interesting women’s matches, I look forward to the match between Zverev, who has been able to hold his serve so far, and his opponent, who is usually more at home at the Challenger level and usually fails in the qualifiers for the larger tournaments. However, his 23-year-old opponent is on the rise.
However, his first two rounds didn’t blow me away, the competition was manageable. Nick Kyrgios delivered a weak performance and Arthur Cazaux was hardly able to set any highlights after Melbourne 2024.
Nevertheless, he has already lost five service games and Zverev has so far taken about every second point on serve from his opponents, while he himself has offered a whopping 74 percent of his brand-threatening first serves twice. After two successful Zverev tips, it’s time for the third tip, Betano has the right odds!
Our expert tip: 3:0 Zverev
Australian Open tips today 17.01.: Borges – Alcaraz (04:00)
Like Zverev, Alcaraz has made it through the first rounds without losing a set. The Spaniard has big plans, which is also symbolized by his almost shaved head. After all, the Australian Open trophy is still missing from his trophy cabinet. Alexander Shevchenko and Yoshihito Nishioka could not do anything against the super defensive man.
Alcaraz already has 14 breaks to his name. He has also stabilized his own serve, which for me was the most improvable of recent years. That will be difficult for Nuno Borges, who, although he had an excellent day against the in-form Jordan Thompson, will probably also lose out to Alcaraz.
Our expert tip: 3:0 Alcaraz
Tennis Tips today 17.01.: Djokovic – Machac (09:05 am)
For the Australian Open late risers, I still have the match of the most successful player of all time, who I don’t see as clearly ahead as the bookmakers. In Brisbane, he failed in the quarterfinals against Reilly Opelka and in Melbourne, he stumbled in the meantime against Jaime Faria and Nishesh Basavareddy, two as yet unknown young guns.
Djokovic needs more consistency against Machac. The mixed doubles Olympic champion has a very dangerous forehand and knocked out the last Djokovic conqueror, Opelka. In addition, the direct duel speaks for my following bet, which I like best of all the recommendations today.
Our expert tip: Set win Machac
