Out of a total of 15 teams playing in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL), 10 teams will qualify for the DEL Playoffs 2025 after the 56-match basic round, i.e. two thirds.
The top six teams after the basic round qualify for the quarter-finals.
The other four teams that finished in 7th to 10th place in the table have to go into the pre-playoffs. The two winners of these “qualifying games” are in the quarter-finals of this year’s DEL playoffs and can continue to play for the championship title.

After the DEL main round 2024/25, the eight of the ten participants for the playoffs have been determined.
ERC Ingolstadt took first place after the basic round. The reigning champions Eisbären Berlin, the Pinguins Bremerhaven, the Mannheim Eagles, EHC Red Bull Munich and the Cologne Sharks also progressed to the 2025 DEL playoffs without any problems.
The teams that finished the basic round in 7th to 10th place will play in the “pre-playoffs” for the last two free playoff tickets.
Mode with home ice and best-of-7 format
The DEL playoffs mode is anything but complicated. The pairings are based on the final ranking of the basic round.
The first team after the basic round faces the winner of the pre-playoff round with the lowest ranking in the main round in the quarter-finals. The runner-up will face the second lowest-placed team after the main round.
The other two quarter-final series have already been decided in advance. Here, 5 of the basic round play against each other. In the semi-finals and final, home ice will also be decided by which team finished higher in the main round.
While the pre-playoffs are played according to the “best of three” format (two wins are needed to advance), the “best of seven” mode is played from the quarter-finals up to and including the final series of the DEL playoffs. This means that four wins in a series are required to win.
In the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, the ranking after the main round also has a major advantage. The lower seeded team has home games in games 1, 2, 5 and in a possible decisive 7th game.
