EFL Cup, 3rd round, Tuesday, 24/09/2024 at 8:45 PM
In the EFL Cup clash between Wimbledon and Newcastle, a cult club faces a seasoned Premier League team. The clear favorite from Northumberland has to hold its own against a passionate underdog with home advantage.
Wimbledon has nothing to lose and wants to use the magic of the cup to annoy the Magpies. My Wimbledon Newcastle tip, meanwhile, is the only football bet I would place for you on Tuesday.
What a cool story! When I found out that the AFC had managed to beat Ipswich Town in the second round to qualify for the third round, I was over the moon.
Wimbledon is simply unique – a club that was re-established by fans in 2002 after the old club moved. Since then, they have fought their way up from the depths of English football.
The club stands for heart, passion and an incredible fan culture. Only football writes stories like this! And with my Wimbledon Newcastle tip, with a bit of luck you can also benefit from the upswing of the “fan club”!
Wimbledon and Newcastle are currently in quite different “football dimensions”, there is no doubt about that. Let’s take a closer look at both to get a feel for the current state of both such unequal opponents.
NUFC had a tough encounter against Fulham last weekend.
The Magpies quickly fell behind to early goals from Jimenez and Smith Rowe. Although Barnes scored right after half-time, they were unable to turn the game around.
A glaring error by Bruno Guimaraes ultimately led to Reiss Nelson scoring the 3-1 for Fulham. Newcastle thus missed the chance to climb to the top of the Premier League.
Fun fact: Newcastle already had a tough time in the last round of the competition. Although they ultimately made it to the EFL Cup knockout stage, their game against Nottingham Forest was not an easy one.
They only managed to win on penalties after a lackluster performance in regular time. Nevertheless, we must not forget that NUFC has the depth in its squad to take on the underdog on Tuesday.
AFC, on the other hand, is currently surprising everyone across the board. Johnnie Jackson’s team caused one of the biggest upsets in the EFL Cup with an impressive win on penalties against Ipswich Town.
In regulation time, Goodman, the Wimbledon goalkeeper, saved two penalties – thereby creating a monument for himself that will last a lifetime.
But Wimbledon’s form in the league is just as remarkable: three league games without conceding a goal, including a 3-0 win against MK Dons and a 1-0 win against Fleetwood Town.
The fourth-tier side are in an excellent fifth place in League Two and have recently put together an impressive run of six consecutive unbeaten games.
The home side have not even lost at home in seven games, which should of course give them added confidence.
While Wimbledon remains the clear underdog in betting circles, too, Newcastle must not take this encounter lightly under any circumstances.
The Premier League club has always made it to the last 16 of the EFL Cup in the last two seasons and will do everything they can to continue this streak. But the underdog will be lurking for their chance.
Wimbledon may only be an English football middleweight, but scoring twice within regular time against Ipswich Town is no mean feat.
I don’t really believe in a sensation, so I wouldn’t recommend a Wimbledon Newcastle tip based on that.
However, the Betano app provides all profit-oriented sports betting fans with a both-teams-meet bet at odds of around 2.00, which in my view is one of the few betting offers for this game that is worth taking up.
A small ray of hope for Newcastle: there were no new injuries in the game against Fulham. Nevertheless, Wilson, Botman and Lascelles remain on the bench with knee problems.
Coach Howe will surely rotate, especially since the important game against Manchester City is coming up. Names like Almiron and Tonali are likely to play a bigger role.
Dubravka is likely to replace Pope in goal. Interesting: newcomer Vlachodimos has not yet had a real chance. Let’s see how much Howe actually changes!
Wimbledon also survived the game against Bradford without any new injuries. However, captain Jake Reeves has been out with an ankle injury since the game against MK Dons.
Coach Jackson said that Reeves’ condition has improved and that he might return on Tuesday. The team is otherwise in good shape.
Conclusion: Wimbledon have been convincing defensively of late and will throw everything they’ve got in front of their home crowd to annoy Newcastle as well. But even a B-team of the Magpies should ultimately be too strong.
Nevertheless, I think the AFC will score at least one goal, especially since they have already knocked out a Premier League team against all expectations.
My Wimbledon Newcastle betting tip: Both teams to score!
